I was researching language and people group information for this month’s newsletter about the work of the JESUS film in Togo, and I came across this great site . It is from SIL international, which was formerly know as the Summer Institute of Linguistics and is an affiliate of Wycliffe translators. The language maps in particular are incredible. You can instantly see the distribution of languages (and just how many there are!).
According to the site it’s 510 in Nigeria, 820 in Papua New Guinea, 737 in Indonesia, 291 in Mexico, and 235 in China, just to pick a few. And these are all active living languages!
